Argyle Stores, Sydney
Argyle Stores are old warehouses in The Rocks area of Sydney. They were built around a cobbled courtyard between 1828 and the early 1880's. These are some of the oldest warehouses storing imported goods such as spirits, tea, cloth and sugar.
The goods arrive at the harbour and are brought to the Argyle Stores, named by Governor Macquarie after his birthplace, Argyle, in Scotland.
The oldest section of the Argyle Stores was the house of Captain Piper built in 1828 shortly after he received the land grant. It was later owned by Mary Reibey, an ex-convict turned businesswoman.
Today the Argyle Stores have been gentrified into a retail precinct of boutiques and accessories stores. However the period character of the area has been retained.
