Bennelong Point, Sydney
Bennelong Point is the location of the Sydney Opera House. It is a promontory jutting out into the Sydney Harbour. Originally a small tidal island, it was known by the indigenous tribe as Tubowghule.

Bennelong Point acquired its present name in the 1790's. It was named after Bennelong, an Aborigine who was kidnapped and put to serve as a cultural interlocutor by the British. He succeeded in persuading Governor Arthur Phillip to build for him a hut on the location that now bears his name.
The original tidal island was rediscovered during the excavation for the construction of the Sydney Opera House. Before the opera house was built, Bennelong Point was the site of the Fort Macquarie Tram Depot which was demolished to make way for it.
