About Bondi Beach

Bondi Beach is a famous beach and suburb in Sydney. Pronounced "BOND-eye", Bondi Beach is located 7 kilometres east of the Sydney central business district, with the suburbs of Bondi, North Bondi and Bondi Junction neighbouring each other.

Bondi Beach is about one kilometre long of golden sand and is a big tourist attraction in Sydney. Surf Life Saving Australia has given different hazard ratings to Bondi Beach in 2004. The northern end has been rated a gentle 4 (with 10 as the most hazardous), while the southern side is rated a 7 due to a famous rip current known as the "Backpackers Express" (also known as the "Bondi Tram" or the "Bronte Express" because swimmers may end up at Bronte - two beaches south - if they are caught in it). During the summer months, an underwater shark net is shared with other beaches along the southern part of the coast.

Bondi Beach is the place where much of lifesaving organisations were born. Bondi Bathers Surf Lifesaving Club is the world's first surf lifesaving club and North Bondi Surf Lifesaving Club is a federation club. Both clubs were founded in 1907. Bondi members invented the surf reel and many other icons of lifesaving. Bondi holds the most Australian Surf Lifesaving Championship gold medals in R&R (rescue & resuscitation) and North Bondi hold the most gold medals in March Past.

Visitors come to Bondi beach for its seafront cafés. There is a pavilion at Bondi Beach that serves as a community centre. It was built in 1928 as a changing room. Bondi Beach is an alcohol-free zone, so no liquor may be brought to the beach.
