North Head is a south-pointing headland that forms the northern face of the entrance to Sydney Harbour. It is located to the southeast of Manly. It covers 3.85 sq km. Areas that have not been taken over by residential development are now protected as the Sydney Harbour National Park.
There was a quarantine station at Spring Cove, on the western side of North Head that operated since 1828. It was one of the many quarantine stations set up in each of the states of Australia, to prevent the introduction into the country of communicable diseases such as smallpox and whooping cough. Between 1934 and 1945, there were defence facilities on North Head. After it wound down, the facilities were taken over in 1953 by the School of Artillery, which occupied them until 1998 when it relocated to Puckapunyal Army Base in Victoria.
The eastern coast of North Head is a line of ocean cliffs facing the Pacific Ocean. It offers scenic vistas of Manly.
