St James' Church is the oldest church in Sydney. Located on King Street, it was designed by convict architect Francis Greenway in the Georgian style, built in 1819 and consecrated in 1824. The building was actually intended to be a courthouse, but was modified in 1820 before construction began. The reason was the abandonment of the plans to build a grand cathedral on George Street. Greenway was unhappy about the change. He designed a simple and elegant church in place of the courthouse. A steeple was added to the western end to make it look more like a church. The St James' Railway Station is located beneath this church. A Children's Chapel was added to the church in 1930

As one of Sydney's most historic buildings, St. James' Church is a tourist attraction.
