About the Sydney Harbour Tunnel

The Sydney Harbour Tunnel is a vehicle tunnel that goes under the Sydney Harbour. It was completed in August 1992 to reduce the load of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The Sydney Harbour Tunnel consists of three sections: two 900-metre land tunnels on the North Shore, two 400-metre land tunnels on the South Shore and a 960-metre immersed tube structure.

The Sydney Harbour Tunnel links to Warringah Freeway at North Sydney, and Cahill Expressway at the entrance to the Domain Tunnel. The tunnel is 55 metres down on the northern entrance, and 35 metres down on the southern entrance. At its deepest, it is 20 metres below sea level. It carries two lanes of traffic in each direction.

The total construction cost of the Sydney Harbour Tunnel came to A$554 million. It is strong enough to withstand earthquakes and sinking ships. As of 2005, the Sydney Harbour Tunnel carries 86,800 vehicles a day. The toll for using the Sydney Harbour Tunnel is A$3.00. Payment is fully electronic, through e-tag and e-pass video tolling.
